Overton's Garden is an invitation to unlimit thinking on sustainability and creating a better world

“A powerful exploration of how we got here, what’s holding us back, and an invitation to step into the unfamiliar to open up new ways of thinking.”
Fiona Ras-Jones Founder, Mission Works
“Don’t send your children to school until you’ve read this book.”
James Gill CEO, EcoSend
“I came away excited about the future, and ready to throw the word sustainability out the window.”
Hannah Cox Founder, Better Business Network
“A fabulous book - I’d encourage anyone to dive in and be taken on an adventure.”

Jessica Böhme Founder, Institute for Practical ekoPhilosophy
“A book that helps broaden thinking by pointing out what should be obvious... but somehow isn't”
Emily Danby Mediator & Relational Facilitator
“A book that lifts the blinds and shows you who put them there in the first place. It swaps fear for clarity, and clarity for actual agency.”
Asim Hussain Founder, Green Software Foundation

Explore Overton's Garden

We need new thinking more than ever, and yet seem to have a drought of visionary ideas to inspire progress.

Have we been trapped inside the “Overton Window” of acceptable thought, not daring to look beyond the frame and see what might lie beyond?

Overton’s Garden takes you on a daring adventure beyond the boundaries of mainstream environmental and social narratives to explore a neglected ecosystem of thought, with its seeds of hope, nutritious fruits, and medicinal herbs, as well as its prickly brambles and dangerous Creatures.

This book will take you to places that you never expected to find in a book about a better world, and in doing so you might just begin to transcend the boundaries of your own perspectives, rewild your thinking, and grow new creative hope.

About the author

Tom Greenwood is a writer, designer, sustainability thinker and lover of wisdom. He co-founded Wholegrain Digital, a certified B Corp and one of the world's leading sustainable web agencies, created the world’s first carbon calculator for websites, and is author of the influential book Sustainable Web Design.

He’s been featured in media including the BBC, CNN and the documentary film Responsible. Tom writes and speaks regularly on sustainable business, design, technology, and living, exploring big, difficult, necessary ideas to stretch thinking on how we can move toward a better world for everyone — human and non-human alike.

Overton's Garden is his most ambitious and personal work yet — a book he had to write, even when it seemed like maybe he shouldn't.

“My hope is that if you read this book, you'll come away with new ideas, even if you disagree with everything I've written.”

Ordering the paperback from the EU?

Sadly I can't currently post paperbacks to the EU. New customs rules mean a book sent from the UK arrives with import charges almost as large as the price of the book, and I don't want that landing on your doorstep.

For now, the paperback is on Amazon across the EU. Amazon shows any import taxes and charges at checkout, so you'll see the full cost before ordering. Pick your country's store:

No store for your country? Most of these deliver across the EU. The eBook and audiobook aren't affected, so you can still buy those here.
